ABSTRACT
Introduction: the lactate/albumin index (I-L/A) has been proposed as a useful and simple tool to predict mortality in patients with septic shock.
Objective: determine the predictive mortality capacity of the I-L/A in patients with septic shock.
Material and methods: a retrospective cohort study of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was conducted with the diagnosis of septic shock. The information was obtained from the ICU database. The prognostic performance of the lactate/albumin index compared to SAPS III and SOFA was analyzed.
Results: we included 334 patients with septic shock; 190 (56.9%) male patients with a mean age of 69.6 ± 14.1 years. The AUC was 0.790 (95% CI, 0.742-0.838), 0.742 (95% CI, 0.690-0.795) and 0.669 (95% CI, 0.611-0.727) for I-L/A, SOFA, SAPS III respectively. The best cut-off point for I-L/A was 0.79, with a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 68%.
Conclusions: the I-L/A is a tool with good discriminatory ability to predict mortality in patients with septic shock.
