Introduction. The information, orientation and teaching that the patient and family receive about
self-care, before and after the kidney transplant, is essential; they are stages where they are prepared
for unknown events or actions. Teaching self-care will have to be based on knowledge and skills that
facilitate adaptation to healthy lifestyles and avoid complications that put the effectiveness of the graft
at risk.
Objective. To carry out a systematic review on the self-care teaching that kidney transplant
patients receive from the nursing professional in the clinical follow-up consultation, pre- and postoperatively,
as well as the use of didactic resources.
Methodology. The systematic review was between
August 2022 and March 2023. The PRISMA guidelines were followed with reviews in PubMed, Elsevier,
Clinical Key, CINAHL and Scielo between a period from 2015 to 2023 of first initiation and in a second
review in Google Scholar. Of the total, 20 works were selected that met the PICO question and the
eligibility criteria.
Results. Four areas of self-care teaching were identified: educational measures,
comorbidities, infection prevention and mental health. As well as three areas of intervention: physical/
biological, mental and social.
Conclusions. The teaching of self-care that nursing considers is verbal,
demonstrative, written, supported by pamphlets, short videos and booklets, where therapeutic
attachment focuses on educational methods of self-management and how the determinants of HRQoL
improve with transplantation. Thus, such as the participation of the family as “primary caregiver”.
