ABSTRACT
Introduction. The allopathic medical treatment of high blood pressure is widely known. Complementary therapies
can be used to assist with high blood pressure control.
Objective. To analyze the effect of aromatherapy with
lavender on arterial tension in elderly adults presenting with high blood pressure.
Methodology. A quantitative,
quasi-experimental study with a pretest/posttest design was conducted on 26 women from Colima, Mexico,
that were above 60 years of age and presenting with high blood pressure. The study population was divided
into 2 groups: the control group (solvent, n=13) and the experimental group (lavender + solvent, n=13). The
systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured (mmHg) before and after 8 aromatherapy sessions.
The results were expressed as mean ± standard deviation. The intragroup and intergroup differences were
compared using the paired and unpaired Student’s t test, respectively, and statistical significance was set at a
p ≤ 0.05.
Results. The differences in the systolic and diastolic pressures of the control group after exposure to
the solvent (mmHg) were not significant (127.9 ± 7.5 Vs 128.7 ± 8.16, p= 0.23 and 85.1 ± 7.0 Vs 84.3 ± 6.7, p
= 0.41, respectively), whereas they were significant in the experimental group (124.2 ± 7.3 Vs 113.9 ± 9.7, p =
0.0001 and 80.6 ± 5.3 Vs 72.8 ± 4.7, p ‹ 0.0001, respectively). When the 2 study groups were compared, there
were significant differences for systolic pressure (p = 0.0003) and diastolic pressure (p ‹ 0.0001).
Conclusion.
Aromatherapy with lavender essential oil may decrease arterial tension in hypertensive elderly a dult women.
