ABSTRACT
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the world. Breast reconstruction surgery provides patients with an improved body image and a better quality of life. The objective of this work is to detail the incidence of breast reconstruction at a Hospital of the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers in Mexico City. We carried out a retrospective, observational and descriptive study in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service in patients mastectomized due to breast cancer by type of surgery and reconstruction, as well as the demographic and epidemiological characteristics by sex, age, histological type, affected breast and diagnosis in a period of 3 years and 9 months. The results were 42 cases; all of them were female and the average age was 55. The highest proportion of age was between 50 and 59 years (47.6%), followed by 40-49 years (23.8% of cases). The histological types reported were infiltrating ductal carcinoma (76.1%); ductal carcinoma in situ (11.9%) and infiltrating lobular carcinoma (11.9%). The most affected was the right breast in 59.5%. The most frequent reconstruction techniques were the transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap (TRAM) in 35.7% of the cases; secondly, the use of tissue expander with implant placement in 21.4%; latissimus dorsi muscle flap in third place (16.6%), collection and application of fat graft and reconstruction of nipple areola complex (11.9% each), and breast implants without expanders (2.3%). We concluded that the choice of the breast reconstructive surgical technique with the best results is made in accordance with several criteria, considering the condition and viability of the breast and the donor tissue, as well as the anatomy and condition of the patient and the contralateral breast.
