ABSTRACT
The pre-eclamptic syndrome is a major medical problem leading to substantial maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. The etiology is unknown, although may have a genetic predisposition or be associated with significant alterations in the immune response resulting in a multisystem disorder characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, and coagulation and/or liver function abnormalities. No single screening test or intervention to prevent preeclampsia has been found to be reliable and cost-effective. Treatment is still prenatal care, timely diagnosis, proper management, prevention of seizures and timely delivery. This review is an up-date in the diagnosis, risk factors, prediction, prevention, complications and management of the preeclampsia-eclampsia syndrome.
