ABSTRACT
Introduction: in hemotherapy it is essential to have sufficient reserves of studied blood components.
Objective: determine the frequency of the main causes of deferral in blood donors.
Material and methods: retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study determined the 10 most frequent causes of rejections between 2010 and 2018. Hexa-Bank
® software was used to collect data; frequency analysis is performed with 95% Wilson confidence intervals (95% CI); in the association of 4 groups and their type of deferral, a statistical analysis with significance tests of χ
2 (95% CI); p < 0.05 (CDC Epi Info
TM software).
Results: of the total of 129,670 pre-donors; 47,093 were rejected corresponding to 36.32% (47,093); of these 53.16% (25,035) men and 46.84% (22,058) women. The three main causes of rejection were: elevated leukocytes 12.95% (6,099); low hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) 12.21% (5,752) and poor-quality veins 11.64% (5,481). In the risk association in deferred donors, a greater risk of being rejected was observed in block I; OR = 1.04 (95% CI = 1.026-1.07); the most significant were: cancer with OR = 3.00 (95% CI = 1.059-5.549); tattoos with OR = 1.782 (95% CI = 1.577-2.094) and anemia with OR = 1.549 (95% CI = 1.464-1.639).
Conclusion: heterogeneity is observed in the frequency of deferrals.
