ABSTRACT
Introduction: the increase in population age is associated with a higher incidence and prevalence of geriatric syndromes, among which frailty syndrome stands out, and consequently, an increased risk of hip fracture. Calcar replacement and Thompson hemiprosthesis (TH) placement is a therapeutic approach that has proven to be safe and effective.
Objective: to analyze functionality in patients undergoing trochanteroplasty with Thompson hemiprosthesis placement in transtrochanteric hip fractures.
Material and methods: a prospective, observational, longitudinal and single-center study was carried out, where the functional evolution of patients undergoing Thompson hemiprosthesis placement was compared.
Results: 27 patients were recruited who presented improvement in perceived pain at each follow-up visit (p = 0.0025) and a tendency to improve functionality, although the use of orthosis in all cases at 3 months was seen.
Conclusion: calcar replacement and Thompson hemiprosthesis placement for transtrochanteric hip fracture is a safe therapeutic option that allows survival with improvement in pain and functionality.
