ABSTRACT
Objective: To report a case of congenital teratoma of the neck in a newborn, its approach and short-term follow-up.
Material and
method: Retrospective study of a male term newborn, referred from the second level on the sixth day of life, prenatal diagnosis of
cervical tumor plus polyhydramnios at 35.4 weeks of gestation, by obstetric ultrasound.
Results: The surgical intervention was performed
on days 14 of extrauterine life, with oblique incision in two portions with exposure of encapsulated highly vascularized tumor.
The tumor was completely resected, microscopic examination revealed 60% immature teratoma and 40% mature soft tissue with a
size of 5.4 x 4.5 cm, with surgical limits without neoplastic cells.
Conclusions: Congenital teratoma of the neck is a rare entity, with a
high probability of surgical treatment; prenatal diagnosis and follow-up are essential to improve the prognosis.
