Updating the integral treatment of the primary palate

ABSTRACT

Based on the classification of primary and secondary palate an article was published in 1979 mentioning that the main objective was to repair the structures involved in the primary palate of a cleft patient. The primary palate was corrected with a vomerine flap, to prevent the frequent orovestibular fistulae and, a simultaneous lip and nose repair with external incisions on the nasal dorsum. In time, some variations were adapted to allow the utilization of the triangular flap technique for lip repair and prevent hearing problems in the future with bilateral myringotomy. Now, 27 years later, we present an update of the criteria and techniques to treat the primary palate.
