ABSTRACT

Background: COVID-19 is a global health emergency that involves all spheres of society. Isolation of contact, suspected and confirmed patients is a timely and necessary measure.
Objective: to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the Cienfuegos children patients who are contacts, suspects and confirmed COVID-19.
Methods: observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, ambispective study that included 1 823 pediatric patients who were contacts, suspected and confirmed with the disease, from March 2020 to April 2021. The analyzed variables were: age, sex, attendance at institutions, municipality of residence, months of hospitalization, category of hospitalization, clinical manifestations, comorbidities, source of infection and clinical evolution. An individual medical history was compiled during hospitalization.
Results: the most frequent age was 5 to 9 years old; more than 50% of those confirmed were adolescents. Only 11% do not attend a school institution. The Palmira municipality presented the highest incidence rate. Asymptomatic patients were more frequently. In symptomatic patients, fever and runny nose predominated. The 18% of those confirmed had at least comorbidity. Allergy and bronchial asthma were the most frequent comorbidities. The source of infection was determined in 100% of the cases. All the children presented a favorable evolution.
Conclusions: stopping the spread of the new coronavirus is a priority, in which the isolation of contacts, suspects and confirmed is the cornerstone.
