ABSTRACT
Introduction. Furuncular or subcutaneous myiasis is caused by Dermatobia hominis, it is more common in America especially in tropical forests, and by Cordylobia anthroprophaga (tumbu fly) in Africa. It is a known disease in these regions, but unknown in other regions.Clinical case. Male adolescent, who travels to a tropical area of Chiapas, Mexico, to carry out field studies. After a week of stay, he presented an increase in volume and a papular lesion in the infraoptic region and in the arm, with torpid evolution despite topical and systemic treatments. He also presented discharge with the formation of boils at the lesion sites. Furunculoid myiasis was suspected, therefore the treatment consisted of suffocating the larva with topical treatment, in order to extract it or to have it come out on its own.
Conclusion. Furunculoid myiasis should be suspected in the presence of inflammatory processes of the skin with a torpid evolution, especially in exposed areas (arms, legs, face and neck) without response to classical treatments and who have a history of having traveled to tropical areas and having been bitten by flies or unknown insects.
