ABSTRACT
Introduction: COVID-19 is a global phenomenon, beginning in late 2019. Responses to the pandemic varied from state to state in Mexico.
Objective: contrast Guanajuato's response with respect to the rest of the country, in handling the pandemic.
Material and methods: ecological study of time series, using open data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance System. Subsequently, the data of children under 19 years of age in the period from April 2020 to December 2022 were selected.
Results: graphs are designed by month, the percentage of confirmed cases, hospitalized positive cases, cases diagnosed with pneumonia, and the case fatality ratio. Subsequently, the data was aggregated semi-annually to compare the rates. In the first months Guanajuato shows lower percentages than the rest of Mexico. In much of 2021 the trends were similar. However, in 2022 the percentage of hospitalizations was higher in the state of Guanajuato. Regarding mortality and diagnosis of pneumonia, Guanajuato and the rest of Mexico showed a rate ratio that was not statistically significant other than 1.
Conclusions: there are not differences in the evolution of the pandemic between the state of Guanajuato and the rest of the country. Questions about the influence of public health policies such as the vaccination campaign were outside the scope of this study.
