ABSTRACT
Hand injuries are among the primary causes of visits in occupational health. Timely and appropriate treatment decreases recovery time as well as complications and sequelae. The diversity and complexity of the anatomy of the hand affected by the injury make it necessary for primary-care physicians to have clinical practice guidelines l to provide appropriate care. This paper includes three practice guidelines. The first provides recommendations for treating traumatic hand injuries including identification, early treatment, classification, and timely referral when needed. The second and third guidelines establish recommendations for simple open-and-closed wounds that can be treated entirely by a primary-care physician. The guidelines also include rehabilitation recommendations that assist the physician to complement treatment. The guidelines are based on the published evidence registered at the Cochrane Library and Medline databases.
