ABSTRACT
Osteoarthritis is caused by degenerative loss of articular cartilage that, according the affected anatomic region, will cause different syndromes. It is most common in older adults. Its main symptoms are pain, joint stiffness, and crepitus; x-ray results can complement the clinical diagnosis. Evidence based-clinical practice guidelines were developed to assist primary-care practitioners to diagnose, classify, and treat knee and hip osteoarthritis. Publications found through a systematized bibliographic search were used to develop the guidelines and a consensus group participated in review and development. The guidelines include clinical and radiologic criteria to classify the functional status of the osteoarthritis and recommendations to provide pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment. Special emphasis was placed on preventative measures for joint protection including physical therapy, which can be used during both acute and chronic phases, and muscle-strengthening techniques.
