ABSTRACT
Dyspepsia is a common cause of visits to primarycare clinics and is characterized by epigastric pain or discomfort unaccompanied by evidence of other diseases that explain the symptoms. To streamline the medical care process, evidencebased practice guidelines to treat dyspepsia were developed. The structure of the guidelines is based on the sequence of daily clinical decisionmaking. It includes recommendations for differential diagnosis and treatment, emphasizing alternatives that are accessible to primary-care practitioners. The guidelines are based on published evidence registered in the Cochrane Library and Medline databases between 1990 and 2002, as well as on clinical guidelines published on different Internet sites.
