ABSTRACT
Introduction: during the pandemic, it should be considered that vector-borne diseases (VBD) and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) have similarities in clinical presentation, which could have caused a delay in the diagnosis and spread of the virus.
Material and methods: an ecological study was carried out. The national censuses (SINAVE database) of vector-borne diseases (dengue, chikungunya, zika and Chagas) in Mexico during the pre-pandemic period and during the COVID-19 pandemic were evaluated. Prevalences are compared with χ
2 and the absolute risk reduction (ARR) of each VBD and cross-product ratio (OR) are calculated.
Results: in this study we found the following prevalences 2019 vs 2020: dengue, 41,505 (0.032%) vs 24,313 (0.019%) OR = 0.59 (95% CI), p = 0.001 and ARR = 0.013%; chikungunya, 9 (0.0000070 %) vs 7 (0.0000055%) OR = 0.78, p = 0.0001 and ARR = 0.0000015%; zika, 138 (0.00010%) vs 20 (0.000015%) OR = 0.14, p = 0.001 and ARR = 0.000085%; Chagas, 889 (0.00069%) vs 391 (0.00031%) OR = 0.44, p = 0.001 and ARR = 0.00038%. VBD mortality, 191 (0.0000015%) vs 79 (0.00000063%) OR = 0.41, p = 0.001 and ARR = 0.00000087%.
Conclusion: the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico had an effect of underreporting, management, and treatment of vector-borne diseases, which should be avoided in future pandemic events.
