ABSTRACT
Breast implant-associated lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) has been linked to macro-textured shells, which has caused most surgeons to no longer place textured implants. COVID-19 and the vaccines cause the activation of the immune system, including immunologically active cells such as macrophages, T lymphocytes and myofibroblasts that are found around breast implants, with inflammatory reactions, which have been associated with an increase in surgical complications of breast implants. We carried out a survey among the members of the Mexican Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, to identify the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic and lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) has had on breast augmentation surgery with implants. 456 associates participated, which represent a very significant sample. Most are applying smooth or nano or microtextured implants; there is a marked tendency to stop using textured implants. The pandemic had a minimal effect on the frequency of breast augmentation surgery with implants and complications. Most of the respondents recognize the impact of lymphoma and its manifestations; however, there are still many surgeons who ignore the clinical findings and what studies should be carried out for the diagnosis of the disease and do not have a letter of informed consent specific for risks of breast implants.
