Characterization of professors from the specialty of pediatric surgery in Holguin

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Pediatric surgery is a specialty that undergoes development in assistance, research and teaching. The professors of pediatric surgery in Holguin have the social responsibility of training specialists in the eastern region of Cuba. They have a great experience and a high teaching preparation, but they must continue improving their development. It is necessary to obtain a scientific degree, promote to higher academic ranks, as well as perfect the methodological work.
Objective: To characterize the professors of the pediatric surgery service of Holguin.
Methods: A descriptive research was carried out in the surgery service of the Pediatric Hospital of Holguin, Cuba, from January 2017 to January 2021. Theoretical and empirical methods were used. An interview was conducted with 23 specialists and a questionnaire was applied to obtain the information.
Results: The professors have great experience in teaching and assistance. All the professors hold an academic rank, however, not all of them have scientific or academic degrees. There are inadequacies in methodological work, as well as in obtaining a scientific or academic degree.
Conclusions: The study carried out on the current trends and characteristics of the staff of pediatric surgery specialty in Holguin allowed to detect insufficiencies that include the methodological level, therefore, it is necessary to deepen how to conduct this process to favor the professional training of this specialty and become a teaching staff of excellence.
