ABSTRACT
During pregnancy, the majority of risk factors for both mother and baby can be detected through provision of prenatal care. Some risk factors are preventable or their potential effects can be modified by means of specific screening and diagnostic or therapeutic actions that should be timely to obtain desired effects. To streamline provision of prenatal care by a health care provider, clinical practice guidelines were developed. The guidelines are based on the published evidence registered at the Cochrane Library and Medline databases. The search included publications appearing from 1980 to 2002. The prenatal care guidelines contain a set of comprehensive recommendations for prenatal care. The structure of the guidelines depicts the sequence of daily clinical decisionmaking and includes criteria to identify, treat, or refer patients in a timely manner for the most common complications of pregnancy.
