ABSTRACT
Introduction: Population aging determines the increase in hospital care. Objective: To characterize hospital admissions of older adults.
Method: A case series investigation was structured with 2047 older adults (≥ 60 years) admitted to Carlos Enrique Font Surgical Clinical Teaching Hospital of Banes, Holguín province, Cuba, during the period July-December, 2019. The following variables were specified: age, sex, cause of admission, in-hospital complications, length of stay and primary health care/hospital interrelation. The Declaration of Helsinki for biomedical research was complied with. Pearson's Chi-square, Odds Ratio (OR), 95% confidence intervals (95%CI), mean and standard deviation were calculated in the MedCal program.
Results: Female sex predominated with 54.6% (n = 1117) compared to male (n = 930; 45.4%). The most represented group was 60-64 years with 36.4%. The risk of encephalic vascular accidents was higher in men (OR = 2.70; 95%CI: 2.24-3.25). The risk of diabetes mellitus and arthropathies was higher in women. Cardiovascular disease and bronchial asthma did not predominate in either men or women. Inhospital complications occurred in 1428 older adults (69.76%). Ninety-four percent of hospitalized patients did not receive visits from the health area and in 99.2% of patients, there was no communication between the hospital and primary health care.
Conclusions: Hospital admission in the elderly is a complex process, not exempt from preventable complications with actions developed from primary health care.
