ABSTRACT
Introduction: Atherosclerosis constitutes the basis of ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Most vascular lesions that affect the brain have an extracranial distribution and due to the superficial location of the carotid, it is accessible by Doppler ultrasound, which is the test of choice in the initial and follow up study of cerebrovascular disease with atherothrombotic origin. Objective: To describe the carotid ultrasound findings detected by Doppler ultrasonography in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease.
Method: A case series study was carried out in patients with a diagnosis of ischemic cerebrovascular disease, who underwent carotid Doppler ultrasound at LucíaÍñiguezLandín Clinical Surgical Hospital from Holguín, Cuba, between September and December 2019, in search of vascular endothelial lesions.
Results: The age group over 60 years (60.9%) was the most affected, as well as the male sex (65.2%). Smoking habit predominated as a risk factor (78.3%). Type III atheroma plaques prevailed (47.5%) and they mainly caused grade I stenosis (45%).
Conclusions: Carotid Doppler ultrasound allowed diagnosis of vascular endothelial lesions for all patients in whom type III atheroma plaques predominated, mainly causing grade I stenosis.
