ABSTRACT
The timely identification and adequate treatment of high blood pressure are critical for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease as well as morbidity and mortality associated with the illness. A positive relationship has been identified between elevated systolic and diastolic arterial pressure and cardiovascular risk, and this relationship is strong, consistent, predictive, and significantly etiologic for individuals with or without coronary illness. This set of clinical practice guidelines presents recommendations for detection, diagnosis, and comprehensive management of arterial hypertension. Best practices were selected from publications appearing in Cochrane Library, Medline, and other published guidelines from 1990 to 2002. Criteria from national reviews in the U.S. and Canada as well as modification of the Mexican Official Norm for Prevention, Treatment, and Control of High Blood Pressure also were consulted. The guidelines highlight the importance of detection, comprehensive classification including evaluation of cardiovascular risk factors, and presence of damage to the target organ, as well as treatment that combines changes in lifestyle and use of medications.
