Clinical Guideline for Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention of Acute Respiratory Infections

ABSTRACT

Acute respiratory infections are among the main causes of morbidity and mortality around the world and predominantly affect patients of pediatric age. At the Mexican Institute of Social Security, such infections are the primary causes of visits to primary-care clinics. An evidence-based set of clinical practice guidelines is presented whose objective is to provide family physicians with recommendations for prevention, identification, and treatment of acute respiratory infections. Cochrane Library, Medline, Embase, Lilacs, and Artemisa databases were consulted. Publications from 1998 to 2002 with the best evidence were selected and from these, recommendations for appropriate management of acute respiratory infections were developed. Diagnosis based exclusively on clinical data and integral treatment options are presented, which include patient or caregiver education, identification of prognosis factors for complications, general recommendations, and appropriate use of antibiotics.
