ABSTRACT
Introduction: obesity is the main modifiable risk factor for the development of chronic diseases, including gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Mexico is the country with the highest prevalence of overweight in Latin America (43.9%). GER affects one third of the general population, and up to 70% of patients with obesity. The Roux-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) has proven to be highly effective in patients with severe obesity and GER, with 97% remission of symptoms. This study seeks to demonstrate the impact that RYGB has on GER in obese patients who do not respond to conventional treatment.
Material and methods: retrospective, observational, analytical study based on clinical records of patients with obesity and GER undergoing RYGB.
Results: 84 patients with GER and obesity were studied, obtaining a clinical remission of 89.7% (p < 0.001), a decrease in the degree of esophagitis by endoscopic finding (p < 0.001) and reflux through the esophagogram (p < 0.039) after a year of RYGB.
Conclusion: RYGB is a useful tool in the treatment of GER in patients with obesity refractory to conventional treatment, with clinical remission of symptoms.
