ABSTRACT
Introduction: the use of diagnostic-therapeutic procedures that involve the administration of intravenous contrast is increasingly common; it is known that contrast-induced nephropathy is a possible complication. The incidence in the literature ranges from 0.5-5% in healthy patients and 12-27% in patients with previous kidney disease.
Objective: to identify the incidence of this complication in our environment and the characteristics associated with its presentation.
Material and methods: patients who underwent procedures involving the administration of IV contrast in the catheterization laboratory of the Hospital Angeles Pedregal in the period of 2019-2020 were studied. Laboratory studies were reviewed, and hospital courses and outcomes.
Results: contrast-induced nephropathy was present in 11 patients out of a total of 202 (5.44%); the main predisposing factors were the presence of previous kidney disease, comorbidities, general physical status, and cardiogenic shock development.
Conclusions: a lower incidence was found than that reported in the literature. No increased mortality or renal replacement therapy (RRT) requirement was found.
