Endometriosis: a complex disease with impact on women's quality of life

ABSTRACT
Endometriosis is a clinical condition characterized by the presence of stroma and extrauterine endometrial glands, that is to say, they are abnormally located outside the uterine cavity, usually found in the pelvis; uterosacral ligaments, ovaries and Douglas bag, however they can also be located in various places such as the intestine, pleural cavity and diaphragm. It is a benign, estrogen-dependent inflammatory process that causes discomfort that can interfere with a woman's quality of life, with a wide range of symptoms that vary from dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia to infertility and chronic pain that can be severely debilitating and incapacitating, it can generate damages in diverses stages: premenarchal, reproductive and in some postmenopausal occasions; It also affects various spheres: social, mental and physical. Over the years its possible pathogenesis has been investigated, some of the main hypotheses are retrograde menstruation, the induction theory, lymphatic or vascular dissemination and metaplasia of the germinal epithelium. The decisive diagnosis of endometriosis is surgical and among its treatments we have available hormonal, non-hormonal and surgical medications. It is a frequent disease that produces great disagreement in the life of the patient, so as health professionals we must manage this pathology in the best way with individualized, timely and effective treatment, either pharmacologically or surgically, depending on the case.
