ABSTRACT
Introduction: myopia has become a serious public health problem in the world because of its high and increasing prevalence in different geographical areas. It is a cause of visual disability if it is not corrected in time, if it is under corrected, or if it is associated with pathologies that increase the potential risk of blindness.
Objective: to argue about myopia as a current health problem.
Development: there are several risk factors that contribute to the development of myopia, among them, family history of first rank, age of myopic debut, rate of progression of the refractive defect during the first year after diagnosis and more time devoted to reading or near work. Myopia is not only a health problem for the patient who suffers from it, but also has an economic and social impact. The techniques and treatments to control the progression of myopia or the diagnosis of the disease are sometimes expensive and inaccessible, both for the patient, the family and the government, which should make them available to the population.
Conclusions: myopia was discussed as a current health problem. With early diagnosis, adjustment and correction of treatment, the progression of myopia is slowed down. Thus, it favors the quality of life of patients and family by reducing the effect of social and health determinants in the healthy and sick population.
