ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the frequency and characterization of transitional vertebrae.
Method: Document analysis through analyticalsynthetic
processing.
Results: Currently, the frequency estimate of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae is 30% in the general population,
being more relevant in young people who can be asymptomatic and begin at early ages with clinically relevant symptoms, mainly
low back pain. Therefore, it is considered to be a relatively common anatomical variant, however, it is overestimated and may have
clinical significance in terms of symptoms and surgical treatment if required, which may be the main cause of the patient's clinical
picture.
Conclusions: currently the method more sensitive and specific imaging is the magnetic resonance because it provides better
anatomical aspects and determines if there are alterations beyond the transitional vertebra such as degenerative changes, especially
at the transition level, helping to avoid confusion at the time of diagnosis or therapeutic procedure of the spine.
