ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare the histopathological and tomographic characteristics of the conjunctiva and tenon, to determine
the relationship of the preoperative inflammatory state with surgical success.
Material and methods: Descriptive study.
Before the procedure, the conjunctiva and tenon were measured by tomography, and histopathology of the sample was
performed. Intraocular pressure was measured at the first, third and sex months. The quantitative variables are presented
in table format and will be analyzed with measures of central tendency type mean and interval and measures of dispersion
type deviation.
Results: The age range was from 36 to 87 years (71.1 ± 11.9). 19 men (59.4%) and 13 women
(40.6%) were included. The mean thickness of the conjunctiva and tenon was 330.8 ± 36.7 µm. The mean values of
inflammatory cells, blood vessels and goblet cells were 15.8 ± 9.1, 14.3 ± 5.0, 3 ± 8 respectively. It was observed that
the inflammatory variables are lower in eyes that achieved absolute success as opposed to those that presented relative
success, although the results were not significant.
Conclusion: Analysis of the results supports the hypothesis; greater
inflammation is expected with less success. However, these were not significant.
