ABSTRACT
Introduction: we present the case of a six year old school boy diagnosed with benign acute viral myositis caused by influenza virus type B. Benign acute myositis is a little known and infrequent complication, mainly caused by type A or B influenza viruses, which occurs in school patients. The clinical and laboratory findings are very characteristic and allow rapid diagnosis during the influenza season.
Objectives: to describe the clinical case of a school patient with a diagnosis of acute viral myositis; accompanied by a bibliographic review of the subject to make known the characteristics of benign acute myositis in pediatric patients in order to make a timely diagnosis. An online review was performed in PubMed and Google Scholar, using the keywords influenza, myositis, pediatric. Subsequently, a clinical case with a diagnosis of benign acute myositis due to influenza type B was described.
Conclusion: benign acute myositis should be suspected in children presenting with sudden onset muscle weakness and a history of respiratory infections. Our patient had clinical symptoms of pain and weakness in the lower extremities; the clinical presentation, the time of the year and the increase in CPK (creatine phosphokinase) were decisive in the diagnosis, in addition, the presence of influenza type B was detected in FilmArray
® respiratory panel (18 viruses and four bacteria), which confirmed the etiology of acute myositis.
