Aseptic meningitis probably induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus

ABSTRACT
Background: The term aseptic meningitis refers to those patients with meningeal irritation symptoms compatible with meningitis, in which cultures are negative.Clinical case: A 54-year-old female patient with a personal history of allergy to ibuprofen and amoxicillin, systemic lupus erythematosus and aseptic meningitis induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, who began with meningeal irritation symptoms after taking ibuprofen. Symptoms were relieved after withdrawing the drug, consequently by we stablished with an exclusion method an aseptic meningitis induced by ibuprofen diagnosis.
Conclusions: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug induced aseptic meningitis is an unusual adverse effect. It is more frequent in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. It is a diagnosis by exclusion, relieving with the withdrawal of the drug.
