Surgical treatment of subaxial cervical trauma. Report of three clinical cases and review of the literature

ABSTRACT

Cervical subaxial spinal lesions correspond to the region between the C3 and C7 vertebrae; They occur in 3.5% of patients with blunt trauma affecting the neck and the most commonly affected region is C5-C6 and C6-C7, and it is more frequent than C0-C2 trauma. Three cases of patients with subaxial cervical spine lesions treated surgically are reported, from their diagnosis to their immediate postoperative period, as well as a review of the classifications and surgical indications. Case 1: a 43-year-old woman with a diagnosis of C5-C6 type C dislocation; case 2: a 66-year-old woman with a diagnosis of C6-C7 type C fracture dislocation; and case 3: a 26-year-old man with a diagnosis of C5-C6 type C fracture. We concluded that patients with subaxial cervical spine injuries should have both a clinical and imaging study protocol, evidence-based decision-making in relation to the indication of surgical treatment, which must be within the first 24 hours from the injury.
