ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus is a group of pathologies that cause
metabolic disorders in which there is an elevation
of blood glucose levels, either due to a total or partial
lack of insulin as a consequence of a defect in production
or secretion at the level of the pancreas or by
resistance to its action. The vast majority of cases
are grouped into what corresponds to Type 1 Diabetes
mellitus (DMT1) (5% of all cases) and is due to autoimmune
destruction of β cells that leads to absolute
insulin deficiency, including Latent Autoimmune Diabetes
of Adulthood (LADA) and Type 2 Diabetes mellitus
(T2DM) (90% of all cases). There are other types
of Diabetes such as monogenic Diabetes (2-5% of all
cases) (Neonatal Diabetes and Adult Onset Diabetes
in Young People, MODY; Maturity Onset Diabetes of
the Young) of which 13 different subvariants have been
described, Diabetes of the exocrine pancreas such as
cystic fibrosis and pancreatitis, diabetes induced by
drugs or medications (mainly glucocorticoids), as well
as gestational diabetes. This is a basic update review
of type 1 diabetes mellitus for the first contact pediatrician
in Primary Care.
