ABSTRACT
Introduction: the social, professional and labor differences that exist among nursing professionals in Mexico, coupled with the uncertainty and high demands for health care that the COVID-19 pandemic has generated since its onset, could condition nurses' risk perception (RP) of becoming infected. The aim of this study was to identify the social, occupational and educational characteristics of nursing professionals, as well as to determine if there is an association of these variables with altered risk perception.
Material and methods: an analytical cross-sectional study was conducted and a sample of 226 nursing professionals from the 32 states of the Mexican Republic was analyzed through an online survey. Correlation of variables (r) was performed through a linear regression analysis. All the analyses were performed using IBM SPSS version 25.
Results: the prevalence of high risk perception was 61.1%, which was related to being in close contact with COVID-19 positive or suspected patients (p = 0.001, r = 0.046) and being caregivers of elderly relatives (p = 0.014, r = 0.068). A total of 83.6% worked in public institutions, 67.7% were in close contact with infected patients, and 29.7% had no professional experience in infectious disease areas.
Conclusions: the risk perception of nurses was conditioned by close contact with COVID-19 positive or highly suspicious patients, as well as by having elderly relatives. It is important to train nurses in infectious areas to prevent their own infection, that of their families and that of other patients.
