ABSTRACT
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common in women, with a lifetime risk of between 10% and 12%, where mastectomy has been the standard treatment for more than a century. In recent decades, reconstructive techniques have been progressively accepted as part of its integral treatment, where reconstruction through autologous tissues has resulted in a high degree of satisfaction. Objective: To characterize breast reconstruction with the use of the transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap at the National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology.
Method: A longitudinal, descriptive and retrospective study was carried out, whose universe consisted of the patients who underwent a breast reconstruction with autologous tissues carried out by the author. The sample consisted of 10 patients who were reconstructed with transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap, during the period between December 2018 and December 2020.
Results: The average age was 46.8 and two of the patients suffered from hypertension, although it was controlled. Four had a Pfannenstiel-type abdominal scar and were obese and all received prior radiation therapy. A muscle was used in 100% of the reconstructions and 8 of them were ipsilateral in location. Among the complications, abdominal wound dehiscence was the most frequent.
Conclusions: Breast reconstruction with transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap continues to be valid with very good aesthetic results and patient satisfaction.
