ABSTRACT
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a frequent reason for consultation on an outpatient basis. However, in this review article the focus is based on urinary tract infections associated with the urinary catheter (UTI-AUC) at hospital level due to its high incidence and associated complications. The main problem is that the pathological potential associated with the use of a urinary catheter, either intermittently or long- term, is not always recognized. In addition to the increase in morbidity and mortality that UTI-AUC can represent, it also represents an increase in hospital costs due to prolonged hospital stay and subsequent sequelae. It is important to recognize the specific indications for urinary catheter placement, the necessary care for its prevention, it’s correct early identification, knowledge of common pathogens and its adequate medical management.
