ABSTRACT
Background: HELLP syndrome is a life-threatening complication of pregnancy in
both mother and fetus. It manifests as a variant of the preeclampsia spectrum, almost
always related to visual changes, complications, such as retinal detachment, are exceptional.
Clinical case:A 26-year-old primigravida patient, 36 weeks pregnant, with hypertensive
disorder, HELLP syndrome type, complicated by bilateral serous retinal detachment
that resolved spontaneously.
Conclusions: Ocular manifestations related to preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome
are usually transient and are related more to an alarm symptom than to an organic
ocular disorder. It is important that patients with these types of obstetric conditions
receive multidisciplinary care.
