ABSTRACT
Risk factors for severe infections due to Gram-positive cocci are among other age, concurrent diseases and immunologic state. Infections due to
S. aureus and
S. pneumoniae have suffered changes in the epidemiologic pattern, particularly in the susceptibility profile, this produced the presence of emergent and re-emergent infections. As an example, in México the etiology of nosocomial pneumonia has changed from Gram-negative to Gram-positive bacteria. The increased frequency of resistance in Gram-positive bacteria has produced high morbidity and mortality in infections produced by these microorganisms. This has induced the development of new antibiotics, such as the oxazolidinones and among them linezolid.
