ABSTRACT
Objective: To characterize operated patients diagnosed with intracranial pyogenic collections. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective, longitudinal study was carried out with 15 patients operated on for intracranial pyogenic collections over a period of twenty months (October 2016 to May 2018), at Josina Machel-María Pia and David Bernardino hospitals, Luanda, Republic of Angola. The main variables studied were age, personal history, number of injuries, topography, treatment variants and main complications. Estimates of frequency, percentage and mean analysis were made.
Results: Children and young adults predominated (66.6%), with a personal history of infections (33%). There was higher incidence of single brain abscesses in the frontal region (44.4%) and subdural empyema in the convexity of the hemispheres (100%). The use of antibiotics was combined, mainly based on a cephalosporin, aminoglycoside and metronidazole. Complications were minimal.
Conclusions: They predominate in children and young adults after septic processes. The most used surgical procedure was trephine and evacuation. Complications were minimal and results were good.
