ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the ultrasound signs of atherosclerotic carotid stenosis in acute ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study was carried out in 262 patients suffering from acute ischemic cerebrovascular disease, admitted at Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y del Castillo Provincial University Hospital, Granma, from January 2018 to December 2019. The variables used were age, sex, presence of atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid arteries and types, stability of the carotid axes, and presence of carotid stenosis. The data were obtained by clinical and ultrasound monitoring of the patients. The variables were described in absolute and relative frequency.
Results: The male sex (54.20%) and the age group from 70 to 79 (31.6%) were more common. Type III plaque was the most frequent (48.60%). Plaques with irregular contours prevailed (52.25%) and there were between 2 and 3 atherosclerotic plaques per patient. Unstable axes predominated. The presence of occlusion in both carotid axes was more frequent (50% - 69%).
Conclusions: Male patients aged between 50 and 70 years, type III plaques and irregular plaques predominated. It was more frequent to find between 2 and 3 plaques per patient and the presence of unstable axes. The largest number of patients had an occlusion between 50% and 70%.
