ABSTRACT
Introduction: The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) is included in the assessment of individuals who receive respiratory rehabilitation in preoperative and postoperative thoracic surgery. Objective: To demonstrate the importance of 6MWT in the assessment of the functional capacity of people treated with thoracic surgery at the Surgical Medical Research Center.
Methods: A quasi-experimental, prospective and longitudinal study was carried out in individuals who were undergoing preparation or were treated with thoracic surgery from September 2015 to September 2016. They were studied in two groups: individuals treated in preoperative rehabilitation (GI) and those seen in postoperative rehabilitation (GII). These subjects underwent the 6MWT to assess their physical capacity, the fundamental variable of this study.
Results: The 6MWT in IG was performed at the beginning of the rehabilitation treatment with average of 440.27 ± 90.8 meters. However, this average increased to 476.73 ± 97.4 meters per month. In GII, a first test was carried out one month after the operation for average of 418.13 ± 89.2 meters. The second test was performed three months after the operation with average of 447.27 ± 92.1 meters.
Conclusions: The 6MWT is a tool that allows assessing the effectiveness of the respiratory rehabilitation program in individuals treated with thoracic surgery. It is a test that allows evaluating the physical capacity of those subjects and their evolution after completing the rehabilitation program.
