ABSTRACT
Leishmaniasis is a zoonosis acquired by the bite of a female sandfly, which
introduces leishmania promastigotes into the bloodstream. The clinical
manifestations are determined by the host’s immunity, which ranges from
a localized to a disseminated form. To date, several genera of sandflies
have been identified, with
Phlebotomus (Old World) and
Lutzomyia (New
World) being the most important for the transmission of leishmania spp.
Diagnosis requires demonstration of the parasite in a sample obtained from a
suspicious lesion using methods such as PCR, Giemsa stain, culture, among
others. The management of leishmaniasis depends on the presentation and
underlying cause. A case of cutaneous leishmaniasis associated with kidney
transplant is presented, highlighting its clinical aspects, manifestations,
histopathological findings, outcome and treatment.
