ABSTRACT
Introduction: spinal cord injuries from gunshot wounds to the spine have negative physical and emotional consequences and are increasing due to physical violence and aggression.
Objective: to present a case of spinal cord injury from a gunshot wound to the spine with neurological recovery.
Clinical case: a 26-year-old female patient who suffered aggression with a firearm causing a T2-T3 fracture, surgically managed with projectile removal and T2-4 instrumentation. Patient showed an ASIA category improvement from B to an ASIA E one year after follow-up. Currently, the patient is asymptomatic, has no restrictions on her daily living activities and her functional result has been satisfactory.
Conclusions: the management of spinal cord injuries from gunshot wounds to the spine requires an appropriate individualization; it remains unclear which cases should be managed surgically to improve patient prognosis.
