ABSTRACT
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy in
humans. Its incidence has been increasing, since it is a tumor
that derives mainly due to accumulated sun damage on the skin.
Although BCC has low mortality it can cause a significant
impact on the quality of life mainly through local destruction.
The definitive diagnosis is achieved through a histological study,
however, both dermoscopy and confocal reflectance microscopy
provide data of relevance for early clinical diagnosis. Despite
the high recurrence rate in topical treatments as monotherapy,
the combined treatment using topical imiquimod 5% and topical
tretinoin 0.05% was found to be effective for the total resolution
of superficial BCC.
We present the case of a 74-year-old female with a lesion
on the posterior aspect of the trunk, with the diagnosis of superficial
BCC, treated with a combination of topical imiquimod
and tretinoin.
