ABSTRACT
Background: white piedra is an asymptomatic, chronic, superficial
mycosis caused by
Trichosporon spp. It mainly affects
the hair of the scalp. We present the case of a nursery school
4-year-old girl with a typical clinic presentation, as well as a review,
highlighting the clinical and mycological aspects, the diagnostic
tools and the suggested treatment. To our knowledge,
this is the first case in Belize.
Clinical case: She present a 3-month evolution with whitish
nodules adhere to the hair shaft of the scalp, easily detached.
Upon optical microscopy and fungal culture, the diagnosis was
confirmed for white piedra, and antifungal treatment was given.
Conclusions: white piedra is a rare mycosis with a worldwide
distribution. The reported incidence in our country is low. The
presented case showed typical clinical features, as well as risk
factors for its development, such as humid tropical climate.
