ABSTRACT
Dermatological manifestations of fungal opportunistic infections
are frequent in immunosuppressed pediatric patients and
can lead to early diagnosis, however there are few reports of
these clinical manifestations in pediatric patients. This is an observational,
retrospective, cross-sectional and descriptive study.
We describe dermatological manifestations at the time of diagnosis
presented in patients with fungal opportunistic infections
reported in the National Institute of Pediatrics. Fifty seven
patients with a mean age of six years (SD ± 4.7) were included
in the study. The main comorbid diseases were primary immunodeficiencies,
malignant neoplasms and pulmonary diseases.
The main agents isolated were
Aspergillus spp. in 54.3% (n = 31)
and
Candida spp. in 42.1% (n = 24). Although manifestations
varied depending on the etiological agent, in general manifestations
reported were disseminated erythematous macules and
papules, except in patients with zygomycosis in whom localized
necrotic ulcers were found. Therefore, deep fungal infections
should be suspected in immunosuppressed pediatric patients
presenting with this type of dermatological lesions to establish
an early and prompt diagnosis.
