ABSTRACT
In 2012 there were around 930,000 gestational syphilis infections and maternal complications worldwide, which makes it remain a public health problem. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate demographic characteristics and main complications of gestational syphilis in Sonora’s Children’s Hospital: gynecology and obstetrics area. This was a cross-sectional study with data obtained between April through December 2021. A total of 93 patients tested positive for syphilis (rapid tests were used), with only 88 patients considered for this study according to our inclusion/ exclusion criteria. The results found a prevalence of 1.14%. The evaluated geographic area was sanitary jurisdiction 1 from Hermosillo. The majority of patients (16.07%) came from health center Emiliano Zapata, 63.63% had prenatal care and only 6.8% had adequate prenatal care. From the total patients who tested positive 29.54% completed treatment and only 22.73% also had partners with complete treatment. Associated risk factors are described in this study but the main one found was drug use with 18.18% of the patients consuming, all of them used methamphetamine.Gestational syphilis continues to be a public health problem with a high rate of neonatal complications. Even though diagnostic tests are easy and affordable to do as well as treatment at any health care center not all women had adequate prenatal care or complete treatment. It should also be considered that there’s no complete follow-up with patients as well as lack of strategies and/or programs that help reduce risk factors therefore reducing maternal and neonatal complications.
