Prevalence of arterial hypertension and its risk factors in Pinar del Río

ABSTRACT
Introduction: cardiovascular diseases, especially arterial hypertension, constitute a health problem with high prevalence.Aim: to characterize the prevalence of arterial hypertension and its risk factors in Pinar del Río in 2018 and 2019.
Methods: observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study in patients with arterial hypertension in the province of Pinar del Río during the years 2018 and 2019. Reports from the statistics department of the Provincial Health Directorate were used as a source for obtaining the information.
Results: the prevalence rate of hypertension was 27,31 and 28,50 per 100 inhabitants respectively in 2018 and 2019 of, with a variation of 4,35 %. The highest rate for both years was exhibited by Mantua municipality (36,52 and 37,17 per 100 inhabitants in 2018 and 2019 respectively). Smoking and sedentary lifestyle were the most prevalent risk factors (17 and 13 cases per 100 inhabitants). The highest smoking rates were exhibited in 2018 by Viñales and in 2019 by Mantua. Obesity and sedentary lifestyle showed higher prevalence in both 2018 and 2019 in Guane municipality. Viñales presented the highest prevalence of alcoholism, and La Palma of hypercholesterolemia.
Conclusions: there was an increasing trend in the prevalence of arterial hypertension and its risk factors between 2018 and 2019. The municipalities with the highest prevalence of arterial hypertension coincide with the highest prevalences of its risk factors.
