ABSTRACT
One of six births in the country occurs in women 19 years of age or less. Teen pregnancy is considered both medically and socially as a high-risk situation. Adolescence is both a period of opportunity as well as a time of vulnerability. In recent surveys, the majority of adolescents reported knowledge of contraceptive methods; however, only one half of sexually active young people use a modern method of contraception. Although there is no hard data, it is estimated that the majority of pregnancies observed in youngsters are probably unwanted. Available information suggests that teen contraceptive needs are not being met.
To ensure a better future for the adolescent group, age at first pregnancy should be increased, interval between pregnancies lengthened, use of modern methods of contraception promoted, and information on sexual and reproductive rights guaranteed. The challenge in promoting the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents is to fill in the gaps concerning what is known about their sexual and reproductive health needs and perspectives.
