Cancer treatment based on epigenetics

ABSTRACT
Cancer is a multifactorial disease that involves genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors in a complex and not well understood interrelationship. Epigenetics, which does not affect the sequence of nitrogenous bases in DNA, is a promising field for the development of new therapies against cancer. A literature review was conducted in PubMed/Medline (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov), regional SciELO (https://scielo.org/es) and Cochrane Library (https://www.cochranelibrary.com). Original articles, literature reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and clinical trials, published preferably in the last 5 years, were the ones chosen. Some of the DNA methylation inhibitors used are azacitidine, decitabine, enasidenib and ivosidenib. The approved histone deacetylase inhibitors are panobinostat, bortezomib, belinostat, romidepsin and vorinostat; the most common histone methylation/demethylation inhibitors are tazemetost, EPZ00477 and pinometostat. Non-coding RNA-based therapies are also used.
